Pearly grins

My friend has advised me to go to a Plano Dentist because she doesn’t feel my teeth are white enough. Now, if my teeth were stained badly and/or in need of serious repair I would consider, but I don’t feel I look that bad. Of course, I could probably use a little work.

I have had some work done in that area the last couple of years. I felt a lot better about my smile after that. And being able to eat corn on the cob. :) My own experience wasn’t unpleasant, though a little costly, and I have had my teeth longer than my mother and her sisters. That’s definitely a good thing. We all are cursed with soft enamel and bad teeth. It didn’t help, of course, that growing up they were too poor to go to a dentist—and that dentistry wasn’t very important in the foothills of Appalachia at the time. So I feel good that I’ve gone this long with all of my teeth except the wisdoms. Why does that even sound good in this day and age?

There are a lot of people in this region that don’t feel that dental work is important and so you see a lot with no teeth or badly aligned dentures. It’s not uncommon to see young people getting dentures and children having badly decayed teeth because of bad dental hygiene (and soda in bottles). There’s a lot of education in the school systems, but kids learn from what they see at home too. And if the expense of a dentist isn’t something that someone can afford—even with government help—there’s nothing that anyone can do. The kids grow up and eventually lose their choppers. It’s a sad thing, and becoming less common, but it’s true. I’d love to see more health care professionals (not just dentists) encourage healthy oral hygiene and care, because it is risky to have bad teeth.

Before I got my work done I had to take antibiotics everytime I had dental work done, because my gums were bad. And, at the time, they believed that it would prevent me from developing a heart infection. Yes, a heart infection. Apparently the bad bacteria travels through the blood stream and is quite dangerous. Yet not many public and health officials demand better availability of dental care. That’s just a shame.

I am considering visiting a dentist to get my crown repaired and replaced. We’ll see if I’ll go for the whitening. I might be able to use a little sparkle in my grin.

Blessing

Grump got called back to work. I’m so happy! I was worried about out money situation, but thankfully his plant didn’t shut down. Now I am able to buy that digital frame I’ve had my eye on for pictures of the kids. I’m thrilled. Of course, he goes back the day after Father’s Day, but that’s ok. In 2 weeks we’ll start getting back on track with everything and be able to breathe a huge sigh of relief.

None of the places where I sent my resume have called me back. I’m extremely disappointed in that, however it’s probably best since Grump is going to be back at work during the day now. We thought for sure the plant was going to shut down in this horrid economy. Another plant just laid off a bunch of people and our county is forecasting a huge budget shortfall this year. Gee, I wonder why. Everyone’s laid off. Nothing to do but sit around and hope for something to fall into your lap, pretty much. We’re so incredibly lucky and blessed that Grump gets to go back. Unbelievably so.

I won’t be able to buy that frame right away, of course. But I’m going to put half the money back for it. There are going to be so many cute pictures of the kids this summer and I’d like to put them in there. And maybe switch them out as the seasons change. Maybe I’ll get a couple for my birthday. Ok, maybe not, but it sure would be nice. At least, though, I’m able to plan for that purchase now, instead of wondering if we’ll be able to pay the bills from month to month. A true and honest blessing.

The Price Checker

We went to Kohl’s to look at clearance items recently. Grump got me a $35 gift certificate for there for Mother’s Day and I’ll only use it during good sales. Anyway, we found some really interesting "As Seen on TV" things and wanted to know how much they cost. Well, there was the list they put on the little card above the shelving, but most of the stuff wasn’t on the list, so we had to search out a lady to help us. She’d bring along one of those handheld POS systems, scan the barcode and tell us what we needed to know. I kept saying to myself "Wouldn’t this be easier if they had a price check point?" I was incredibly frustrated by the entire mess and decided not to use my gift card that day (I’ll wait for their early bird sale).

Guess what? As we were leaving we passed a price check point. I was so mad at both myself and the store policy because, honestly, the lady probably could have saved us all a lot of time and grief if she’d just pointed us to that terminal. I would have been ecstatic to use it instead of keeping her from her work. And I probably would have purchased something instead of leaving frustrated.

Remember when all the major stores had those things? I remember when I first discovered them—I think it was at Wally World—and I was thrilled to play. I found the prices of everything I could get my hands on. Then they became so common place that I expected to be able to use it whenever I wanted, instead of hunting down a price check lady or going to customer service like we used to have to do. It saved so much time and aggravation when something didn’t have a tag. And then the stores had this hare-brained idea that they were going to do away with the normal tagging system and make all pricing a whole new language. Once again those POS systems came in handy. And now they’re doing away with the price checkers, but keeping the crazy “special” tagging systems.

It’s a real headache. I was glad to see that Kohl’s does have one, but was irritated because I didn’t know about it right away. And I wish that every store I went into had one that is visible and apparent and that will save me the time and aggravation of finding someone to translate the pricing system of their respective stores. I long for the price checker to come back into action. :)
