Getting Paid to Spam

I’ve been searching high and low for ways to make money lately. At WAHM.com I stumbled on a thread about getting paid for forum posts and blog comments. I thought that would be interesting because I enjoy both forums and blogs. So I went to investigate.

What I found was shameful. The opportunity consisted of getting paid to basically spam. They give you lists of forums and blogs and told what to say. You then go from one to the other, sign up, and post the same thing over and over. You are given advice on how to use proxies and false emails and how to make sure your spam gets attention from members before it’s deleted. Shameful.

I know that working from home is hard. It’s a crap shoot and not nearly as easy as most people (outside of this lifestyle) think. But I can’t imagine lowering myself to spamming communities with crap. 25¢ a post just isn’t worth the headache or the blight on my conscience, I think. I hate spam in my email and I’ve taken extraordinary steps to prevent it on my other blogs. I most certainly don’t want to be the person posting it. It’s an incredibly nasty endeavor, in my opinion. So, I closed the window and wrote it off.

It’d be nice if my proofreading was back up. I don’t know when that’s going to happen. I’ve actually forgotten about it a couple of times. And writing is hard with the cognitive issues I have. The hunt continues.

Networking from Home

Networking from HomeI haven’t had my morning cup of coffee yet and already I find myself “networking”. This is an important part of freelance work, because without contacts getting a job and making the money is extremely hard. I’ve been learning this with my articles. I get more money with more page views and with more contacts I can get more page views. It can all work out pretty well.

Unfortunately, it takes a lot of time. And with a toddler that can be hard to manage. So, it’s best to set yourself up on a schedule. I’m still working out the kinks in mine.

When you first wake up, after “getting ready” for work, determine if you need to do any research. If the kids aren’t up yet (I normally get up about an hour and a half earlier than mine), then research, jot down your notes, and get a feel for what you want to write. This way when the inevitable interruptions come you can simply lay it to the side and take care of the familial needs.

Now, when you have a few extra minutes, do a little networking. Answer some emails, respond to comments on your blog, and comment other places. It’s important to get your name out there and to make some online friends.

Later, possibly in the evening when everyone’s starting to wind down, take a few minutes and write up the first draft of your article. When the kids go to bed, and you’ve got that time for yourself, write it again. This second writing will use the structure of the first (probably bad) draft, which saves you some time. Now you can re-read it, do your edits and send it in (or save it for later).

But you’ve got to do a little more networking. That comes before it’s bed time. And you’re probably exhausted, but it’s important to get page views and make contacts. So, just leave little comments, don’t get windy in your emails, and all will be well. If most of your network consists of work-from-home moms you’ll soon see that they’re just as tired as you are.

Finding the right Keywords

I have found a fabulous site that references ways to find popular searches of the day.

What People Search For- Most Popular Keywords

By Danny Sullivan | May 26, 2006

Millions of searches are conducted each day on popular search engines by people all around the world. What are they looking for? A number of major search engines provide a way to glimpse into the web’s query stream to discover the most popular search keywords or topics.

Then he goes on to give you a list of ways to check popular search engines for their keywords.

Google Trends the best. Simply because they provide an awesome graph to show you how keywords are faring throughout the day.

Click on one of the terms to the left of the graph and Google will show you how popular that particular search term is for that part of the day.

I clicked on “the bronx zoo star” because I was considering doing a post on that subject. As you can see from the graph Google has declared that particular term “Spicy”. Now if you click on the number 1 search term, “ufc 73 results”, you’ll see that it’s “Volcanic”.

Below the graph you’ll find the most popular news articles and blog posts regarding whichever search term you’ve chosen. And below those results you’ll find generic web results. As you can tell by the way the page is laid out, news and blogs are the most popular hits among Google search users.

Of course, for variety you could use all the keyword search options provided on “What People Search for”.

If you’re curious about the keywords you’ve chosen then try Google AdWords Selector tool. You can enter the keywords or enter the url of an entire site to analyze the keywords. One of my sites turns up “marriage” as the most popular keyword. Google suggests I buy AdWords based on that term. Interesting.

So, for those using SEO and keywords to drive traffic, I suggest utilizing Google and other keyword tools to help you in your efforts. Don’t forget to stop over at Searchenginewatch.com to get more tips and hints.
