Pay equality

Posted by Lizzie on Sep-5-2008

There’s a lot of talk about women’s issues this election cycle. Thanks to Hillary Clinton, and now Sarah Palin, we’re back in the spotlight. In that vein, Congress is pressing for a revote on the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, which failed to pass previously. McCain has come out again it:

“I am all in favor of pay equity for women, but this kind of legislation, as is typical of what’s being proposed by my friends on the other side of the aisle, opens us up to lawsuits for all kinds of problems,” the expected GOP presidential nominee told reporters. “This is government playing a much, much greater role in the business of a private enterprise system.”

I’ve recently engaged in a half-hearted IT job search - in anticipation of my eventual graduation from the Tech program. There seems to be a little available, but I’ve heard that women are not treated favorably in the IT industry. It would please me, and thousands of other women, tremendously if this actually became law. Would I know that my male counterparts were making more than me? Probably not. But this act would give me recourse should I find out about a pay discrepancy after the fact. As a woman hoping to work in a male-dominated field, I would feel just a little better knowing I had a safety net.

There was some talk that this law isn’t necessary. I beg to differ. I worked with a company (unrelated to the tech field) that cut me a mystery check. When I inquired to what the purpose of the check was, I was told that it was to make up for a pay difference between me and my male counterparts. I had no idea that the men were making that much more per hour than I was, but there was a lawsuit and the settlement agreement was that this company would pay the hourly difference to each female for whatever period of time they agreed to (I think it was 3 months, even though I’d been there for over a year at that point). I left that company not long afterward, but my eyes had been opened. The reasoning for the lower pay was that women are mothers and so are prone to miss work because of their sick children. Men, on the other hand, are more reliable and should be rewarded. Really?

At a time when a major political party has nominated a self-proclaimed “hockey mom” to be vice president, there should be no more “she should get less because she’s a mom”. This woman is seeking a job while parenting 5 children (and potentially helping parent a grandchild) so the reason listed above would apply to her and her pay should be cut significantly. Right? No. Wrong. Her husband will be able to tend to the children while she runs for office and he can tend to the children while she continues to govern Alaska (except that he’s got a full-time job plus an extra job on the side in the summer, but that’s not this issue). It’s only fair that the rest of American women enjoy the same equality in pay as the women who govern them.

Pee Wee and Her Hormones

Posted by Lizzie

Pee Wee’s pregnancy is progressing well. Her threshold for hourly contractions has been raised from 4 to 51 and she seems pretty comfortable. Now she’s more concerned with general pregnancy discomfort. She’s getting quite round and feels like her innards are going to be crushed. Her hips hurt. She pees a lot. And she could really use natural acne treatment at this point. Poor kid. She really looks like a whole other person now.

In other really GREAT news, I was just approached to do a highly lucrative review of a soon-to-be released miniseries. I almost didn’t believe it was real, but then I contacted my trainer and she assured me that it is. Holy smokes! I’m really excited about that. I’ll let you know how that goes.

Sadly, I almost got scammed by a collegiate “honor” society (not the Honors program to which I’ve applied) yesterday. Vanity was taking hold. Anyway, I’m not paying that much money for a program I’ve never heard of, just because I’m flattered. No, no, no. After a little research, I decided there are better things on which to spend my money. It would have been thrilling if it were real, though. I’d have been strutting around with that letter taped to my forehead. By the way, Collegiate honor society folks, I am the parent. Please do your research before attempting to gain entrance to my wallet. Thanks.

What’s happening with you?

A Small Update

Posted by Lizzie

I thought I’d better do a small update.

I’ve been very busy with a lot of stuff lately- mostly to do with me. School is getting really crazy and now I’m taking it a lot more seriously. I’m still in shock about the invitation. I don’t know when I’ll hear about it because applicants have until April 15 (tax day!) to apply. How long after that I don’t know either. I wish I could find out though, because if I qualify for the scholarship then I’ll have to switch to full time status and if I do that I’ll have to change my FAFSA to indicate full time status. And then I’ll officially lose my mind. And go gray. Or bald. Or both.

Pee Wee seems to think that because she hasn’t had any major problems in a couple of weeks she can stop taking her medicine and maybe even go to a party. She seriously asked me if she could go to a party. I almost lost my mind. Nope, not happening. She was a little testy about that, but she knows that I’m not going to roll-over for her. Especially not when the issue is this serious. I think that her friends thought if she whined enough I’d give in. Ha! Nope. Not on this. Sorry, people, but Pee Wee’s health is more important that her having fun at this point. Besides, she’s driving me up a wall. How is that not fun for a teenage girl?

I’m “Honor”able

Posted by Lizzie

I got some really good news today. I’ve been invited to apply for the Honors Program at my university! I’m so excited. Now I have to do up a resume of my accomplishments and write a 250 word essay about something particularly meaningful to me (I’m pretty sure I won’t have a problem doing that). Now I’ve got to list all of the things I’ve accomplished. Do you think one thing qualifies as a resume?

If I do get into the program, I’ll have to maintain a 3.0 GPA (I’m pretty sure I won’t have a problem with that either) and take a couple of special classes. I’ll also be eligible for other special programs (similar to internships, but different) and a $1500 per year scholarship. I’m so psyched by this.

At any rate, I wanted to write more and in more detail, but I’ve got a test to study for and an application to finish. I just wanted to share my good news somewhere. Keep your fingers crossed for me.
