Pay equality

Posted by Lizzie on Sep-5-2008

There’s a lot of talk about women’s issues this election cycle. Thanks to Hillary Clinton, and now Sarah Palin, we’re back in the spotlight. In that vein, Congress is pressing for a revote on the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, which failed to pass previously. McCain has come out again it:

“I am all in favor of pay equity for women, but this kind of legislation, as is typical of what’s being proposed by my friends on the other side of the aisle, opens us up to lawsuits for all kinds of problems,” the expected GOP presidential nominee told reporters. “This is government playing a much, much greater role in the business of a private enterprise system.”

I’ve recently engaged in a half-hearted IT job search - in anticipation of my eventual graduation from the Tech program. There seems to be a little available, but I’ve heard that women are not treated favorably in the IT industry. It would please me, and thousands of other women, tremendously if this actually became law. Would I know that my male counterparts were making more than me? Probably not. But this act would give me recourse should I find out about a pay discrepancy after the fact. As a woman hoping to work in a male-dominated field, I would feel just a little better knowing I had a safety net.

There was some talk that this law isn’t necessary. I beg to differ. I worked with a company (unrelated to the tech field) that cut me a mystery check. When I inquired to what the purpose of the check was, I was told that it was to make up for a pay difference between me and my male counterparts. I had no idea that the men were making that much more per hour than I was, but there was a lawsuit and the settlement agreement was that this company would pay the hourly difference to each female for whatever period of time they agreed to (I think it was 3 months, even though I’d been there for over a year at that point). I left that company not long afterward, but my eyes had been opened. The reasoning for the lower pay was that women are mothers and so are prone to miss work because of their sick children. Men, on the other hand, are more reliable and should be rewarded. Really?

At a time when a major political party has nominated a self-proclaimed “hockey mom” to be vice president, there should be no more “she should get less because she’s a mom”. This woman is seeking a job while parenting 5 children (and potentially helping parent a grandchild) so the reason listed above would apply to her and her pay should be cut significantly. Right? No. Wrong. Her husband will be able to tend to the children while she runs for office and he can tend to the children while she continues to govern Alaska (except that he’s got a full-time job plus an extra job on the side in the summer, but that’s not this issue). It’s only fair that the rest of American women enjoy the same equality in pay as the women who govern them.

Slowing my momentum

I thing I’m going to have to buy memory for my PC. I was working with my Photoshop (which is a memory HOG) and it just killed my poor old computer. I was lucky to have saved right before my computer froze up or that image would have been kaput and I would have let it stay that way.

I’ve been working on doing image enhancements for some family members. Just trying it out to see if I have a knack for it. I’m not too bad. There is so much that can be done with that software and it’s taking me more time to get deep into than I anticipated. I’ve used it for minor stuff, such as image resizing and color enhancement, but now I’m way more into it. I like that it allows me to express my artistic side while on the computer. I also love to see what interesting things I can do with it.

I won’t be able to put anything up here, unfortunately. I’ve agreed to respect the privacy of my family and NOT plaster them all over the Internet. I’m planning on taking some wildlife and plant photos soon and maybe I’ll be able to wow you with that later.

Still Chugging

So far I haven’t made any progress. I’m still trying to figure out how to mirror this domain while the DNS is moving. You’d think the instructions would be easier to follow for a Technology major, but I seem to be lacking some kind of gene for the understanding of this stuff. I should just pack up the old Ping Golf clubs and go to the green. I’d have better luck with that, I think, and I don’t even know how to play golf.

I’m moving the archives from here to my subdomain that I mentioned earlier, but for some reason they’re not showing up. I really don’t want to use the WP on this, because I was really looking forward to learning MT. I like the admin interface and the default templates are pretty nice. The lack of real support kind of sucks, but then WP support forums aren’t much help anymore anyway. I think that I’ll have an easier time designing for MT than with WP themes- because, really, the code for the WP themes kind of gives me a headache.

I don’t know. We’ll see. I’ll be hunting for plugins, so if you guys have any ideas shoot me a message.

It’s Time

Tonight I was helping a friend upgrade her WP installation. I actually should have done it a while ago, but she never specifically gave me the go-ahead. Unfortunately for her, I saw a warning about a new threat for the old WP, so I just went ahead and switched it for her1. Now she’s got to find a new theme. Oops.

Still it was a huge headache. I forgot all about deleting the cache and couldn’t figure out why her dashboard didn’t change. I’m pretty sure this was also the reason why her theme kept switching to default on her. Another oops on my part. I hope that it’s working better for her now. Personally, I love the new WP. Some people don’t. She might very well be one of those people.

Right about now I’m wishing I had a basement lined with wine racks so I could help myself to some headache remedy. Of course, if I did have something like that, it probably would have toys and magazines instead of fermented grapes. Why is it these projects always make my head hurt, but I always feel such a sense of accomplishment when I solve the puzzle? Still, I want that wine.
