Pay equality

Posted by Lizzie on Sep-5-2008

There’s a lot of talk about women’s issues this election cycle. Thanks to Hillary Clinton, and now Sarah Palin, we’re back in the spotlight. In that vein, Congress is pressing for a revote on the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, which failed to pass previously. McCain has come out again it:

“I am all in favor of pay equity for women, but this kind of legislation, as is typical of what’s being proposed by my friends on the other side of the aisle, opens us up to lawsuits for all kinds of problems,” the expected GOP presidential nominee told reporters. “This is government playing a much, much greater role in the business of a private enterprise system.”

I’ve recently engaged in a half-hearted IT job search - in anticipation of my eventual graduation from the Tech program. There seems to be a little available, but I’ve heard that women are not treated favorably in the IT industry. It would please me, and thousands of other women, tremendously if this actually became law. Would I know that my male counterparts were making more than me? Probably not. But this act would give me recourse should I find out about a pay discrepancy after the fact. As a woman hoping to work in a male-dominated field, I would feel just a little better knowing I had a safety net.

There was some talk that this law isn’t necessary. I beg to differ. I worked with a company (unrelated to the tech field) that cut me a mystery check. When I inquired to what the purpose of the check was, I was told that it was to make up for a pay difference between me and my male counterparts. I had no idea that the men were making that much more per hour than I was, but there was a lawsuit and the settlement agreement was that this company would pay the hourly difference to each female for whatever period of time they agreed to (I think it was 3 months, even though I’d been there for over a year at that point). I left that company not long afterward, but my eyes had been opened. The reasoning for the lower pay was that women are mothers and so are prone to miss work because of their sick children. Men, on the other hand, are more reliable and should be rewarded. Really?

At a time when a major political party has nominated a self-proclaimed “hockey mom” to be vice president, there should be no more “she should get less because she’s a mom”. This woman is seeking a job while parenting 5 children (and potentially helping parent a grandchild) so the reason listed above would apply to her and her pay should be cut significantly. Right? No. Wrong. Her husband will be able to tend to the children while she runs for office and he can tend to the children while she continues to govern Alaska (except that he’s got a full-time job plus an extra job on the side in the summer, but that’s not this issue). It’s only fair that the rest of American women enjoy the same equality in pay as the women who govern them.

My Livingroom runneth over

Posted by Lizzie

Once again our house is full of teenagers. I feel like packing up some Rimowa luggage and getting out of dodge. Right now one of them is begging me to cook, and amazingly the livingroom looks like someone picked up a box of junk and flung it willy-nilly all over the place. Hi, kids? Yeah, can someone PLEASE pick up in there? Thanks.

Since Grump has gone to afternoons it seems like the house always has some kids in it. Usually I don’t mind them, but then they start wanting to get on the computer, playing rough house with Mags and/or commandeering my television. I’d really like it if they found something in the back yard to do. Of course, that would take them away from technology and we can’t have that can we?

Pee Wee is having more problems with her breasts. She’s got another infection and, honestly, I’m a little worried. Her doctor is too because she won’t call in the antibiotics. The doctor said that Pee Wee shouldn’t be getting these repeat infections. Hopefully we can get her into the office tomorrow. If we can’t then we’ll be going to the emergency room for sure. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it’s nothing more than an infection.

Stinky Messes

Posted by Lizzie

My grandson has officially passed the two month mark. He’s adorable (I’ll post pics at some point soon) and he’s getting so fat. He’s up to 12 lbs. 2 oz.1. His little legs… Recently, though, he’s started to, um, expel some gas that smells an awful lot like whatever his mother has been eating. Not very tasty coming out as it was going in, I’m assuming.

Our basement is getting wet from all the rain and it’s got that smell. I could use a couple of Austin Air air purifiers to get rid of the “wet basement” odor, for sure. It’s horrendous. My mother-in-law let me know in no uncertain terms that “Ugh! It smells!” Yup. Thanks. I know. We have an unfinished basement, with sandstone walls. When it rains the water seeps through the ground then through the walls. Then it makes that lovely aroma that makes everyone want to gag.

Of course, we have dehumidifiers and/or the air to try to calm the scent, but the problem lies in the fact that the Heavens have been opening up daily pretty much. That’s a lot of water. That’s a lot of stench.

Add that to the super smelly diapers, baby gas, husband gas, dog gas, and the fish we had for dinner and… You get the picture? And no, I don’t use air fresheners because of the chemicals. Vanilla on lightbulbs works at night. I love that. Doesn’t help during the day when Grump and KJ and the basement are trying to outdo each other. ;)

I’m becoming immune, I think. That’s a good thing. Still, I’ve got to get some air purifiers.

I Want to Watch…

Posted by Lizzie

Sometimes (when my house is full) I wish I had a Slingbox (it works in tandem with my satellite so I can use the tv without the satellite hookup). There are two teenagers here, a restless man and a preschooler. All of them want to watch something else. Since I’m not feeling well I would love to be able to watch what I want to watch. Apparently, so does everyone else. It’s a beautiful thing.

At any rate, I’ve decided that I’m going to use my MT installation for a gardening blog. I’ve got sooo many ideas but don’t want to put them here. My MIL gave me a “Birds and Blooms” book and I LOVE it. It’s got a lot of interesting information and I want to try some of the tips. That would make a pretty decent niche blog, I think. Plus I’d have somewhere to put my flower photos.

See? That’s one of my problems. I get all these ideas and have to implement the right now and everything has to be perfect and then… See? I have been doing well with my Drama TV gig though. Writing a niche topic just once or twice a week works well for me apparently. And I get the practice. Hmmm. Yes, I’ll do well with a small niche blog.
