Pay equality

Posted by Lizzie on Sep-5-2008

There’s a lot of talk about women’s issues this election cycle. Thanks to Hillary Clinton, and now Sarah Palin, we’re back in the spotlight. In that vein, Congress is pressing for a revote on the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, which failed to pass previously. McCain has come out again it:

“I am all in favor of pay equity for women, but this kind of legislation, as is typical of what’s being proposed by my friends on the other side of the aisle, opens us up to lawsuits for all kinds of problems,” the expected GOP presidential nominee told reporters. “This is government playing a much, much greater role in the business of a private enterprise system.”

I’ve recently engaged in a half-hearted IT job search - in anticipation of my eventual graduation from the Tech program. There seems to be a little available, but I’ve heard that women are not treated favorably in the IT industry. It would please me, and thousands of other women, tremendously if this actually became law. Would I know that my male counterparts were making more than me? Probably not. But this act would give me recourse should I find out about a pay discrepancy after the fact. As a woman hoping to work in a male-dominated field, I would feel just a little better knowing I had a safety net.

There was some talk that this law isn’t necessary. I beg to differ. I worked with a company (unrelated to the tech field) that cut me a mystery check. When I inquired to what the purpose of the check was, I was told that it was to make up for a pay difference between me and my male counterparts. I had no idea that the men were making that much more per hour than I was, but there was a lawsuit and the settlement agreement was that this company would pay the hourly difference to each female for whatever period of time they agreed to (I think it was 3 months, even though I’d been there for over a year at that point). I left that company not long afterward, but my eyes had been opened. The reasoning for the lower pay was that women are mothers and so are prone to miss work because of their sick children. Men, on the other hand, are more reliable and should be rewarded. Really?

At a time when a major political party has nominated a self-proclaimed “hockey mom” to be vice president, there should be no more “she should get less because she’s a mom”. This woman is seeking a job while parenting 5 children (and potentially helping parent a grandchild) so the reason listed above would apply to her and her pay should be cut significantly. Right? No. Wrong. Her husband will be able to tend to the children while she runs for office and he can tend to the children while she continues to govern Alaska (except that he’s got a full-time job plus an extra job on the side in the summer, but that’s not this issue). It’s only fair that the rest of American women enjoy the same equality in pay as the women who govern them.

Stuck in The Middle

Posted by Lizzie in irritations, work from home

I guess I picked a good time to stop with the paid posting. Looks like Izea finally decided to update their bloggers’ PageRanks in their system. Unfortunately, the advertisers don’t seem to care much for RealRank right now, so that means that their best and most adoring bloggers are getting smacked again for something that could have and probably should have been prevented from the get-go.

First I’d like to say that it was good of them to put a freeze on their blogger PR updating. For a while bloggers that previously had decent and better PageRank were able to take the higher paying opportunities and get some extra money for the holiday season. Any opportunities that were taken today won’t be paid out for 30 days. For bloggers who celebrate Christmas that falls after. So they were given a little gift of a couple of extra days to get some cash collected. They did well hyping up their bloggers with the RealRank rollout. When the low-folk on the totem pole saw Google coming around doing the slice and dice, Izea stepped up and shined that light at the end of the tunnel. They made some bold promises and got the blood flowing again. It was good for a couple of days.

Except for some RealRank is proving to be a disappointment. Especially with the continuance of PR based eligibility. Maybe your blog is in the top 20% of RR blogs, but that advertiser is still looking for someone with at least a PR 3. Because of the standoff between Izea and Google that meant that a lot of bloggers were just out of luck. Unless they wanted to blog more loans and even Russian dating sites. Most of these advertisers don’t want the traffic. They want the search engine positioning. The RealRank hype has assured that new bloggers will sign up to do paid posting, and some of those will have better PR, so there really is a market for those opportunities.

Izea still gets their money, Google gets to pretend that they care about search relevancy and the advertisers still get their search engine positioning (afterall, they didn’t get their PR demoted, did they?). The blogger who does this work because they need to make ends meet gets hit over the head, thrown to the side of the road and run over a couple of times for good measure. It’s only business, boys and girls.

What I find really sad is that there are still people in the forums trying to rally the troops. Someone questions what’s happening and someone else tells them to hold on “It’s going to get better! We’ll show them all!” And then the conversation shifts to something more pleasing, more hopeful. There are actually people not associated with any of these folks that are watching every word they type and laughing at them. Why? Is it funny to see people who are just trying to earn a buck being pulled this way and that and getting splattered like yesterday’s roadkill? They don’t want to acknowledge the crap that gets thrown at them from the outside ‘Sphere nor do they want to acknowledge that they’re the only ones losing in this little tug-o-war.

But at least the PRs weren’t updated until after the last holiday payout. And SocialSpark is coming in January. And for sure things will be better then. Just you wait. Advertisers will be falling over each other signing up and paying folks. Right? PageRank won’t matter then. Right?
